After updating the market values of Brazil’s Série A earlier this month, Argentina’s Torneo Clausura becomes the second major league in South America to receive an intermediary update. Overall, 194 players playing in Argentina’s first division received new market values, and there is some movement at the very top. After receiving a 66.7% upgrade from €6 million to €10m, Vélez Sarsfield talent Maher Carrizo is now the third most valuable player playing in Argentina.
“Carrizo is probably the biggest and newest young talent in the Argentine League,” Area Manager Argentina and South America Scott Christensen said. “Carrizo is a left-footed right wing or centre forward who, at the age of 19, is already a key player at Vélez, the same club that developed Thiago Almada. He has a great goalscoring instinct, and the five he scored in nine Copa Libertadores games underline this. He'll be part of the Argentine U20 World Cup squad; so, a good performance there might get him higher in the end-of-year market value.”
Another player who could feature at the U20 World Cup for Argentina is Santino Andino. The 19-year-old Godoy Cruz forward has scored four goals and three assists in 27 games across all competitions this season. “He is a fast and skilled left winger, good in one-v-one situations,” Christensen said. “He's right-footed but has no problems with his left foot.” Although his numbers aren’t spectacular, Andino’s market value is up by 42.9% from €3.5m to €5m. “He's already attracted the interest of clubs like Atlético Mineiro and Olympiacos.” That interest has certainly helped with his market value.
Market values Argentina: Pérez up – Downgrades for Di Césare and Zenón
Another young player to watch is Leonel Pérez from Huracán. The 21-year-old saw his market value increase by 33.3% from €4.5m to €6m. “He's a tall defensive midfielder that's great in aerial duels,” Christensen said. “Most of Huracán's balls pass through him as he plays with clarity and is always an option to pass. He used to play as an offensive midfielder, but now he is a complete defensive midfielder. Pérez is a promising player.”
While there have been some notable upgrades, there have also been some notable downgrades. The two names that stick out are Racing Club’s defender Marco Di Césare (-€1m from €9m to €8m) and Boca Juniors forward Kevin Zenón (-€2m to €7m). While Di Césare has been inconsistent, going from the bench to the starting XI and back, Zenón has seen his form drop. The Boca forward has played just 53 minutes in the Clausura and has yet to score a goal in the competition.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
