There's a heavyweight Champions League clash taking place at Anfield this Tuesday as Liverpool welcome 15-time winners Real Madrid to Merseyside. The Reds come into the game having taken six points from their opening three matches, whilst Los Blancos have a 100% win record thus far and have only conceded one goal. Full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and manager Xabi Alonso will both return to their former stomping ground, but which other players have represented both Liverpool and Real Madrid down the years? Let's find out.
Players to play for Liverpool & Real Madrid
We have ranked the 11 stars to represent both clubs by the number of appearances they made for both teams combined. Leading the way in that respect is midfielder Steve McManaman, who played 364 games for Liverpool and 158 games for Real Madrid - 522 in total. In second is the current Madrid boss Alonso who racked up 446 games combined for both clubs. Third goes to Alexander-Arnold, who played 354 matches for the Reds plus a further 10 this season for Real Madrid. Former striker Michael Owen is fourth with a combined 342 appearances, whilst former full-back Álvaro Arbeloa completes the top five with 336 games accumulated.

Three more players surpassed 100 combined appearances for both clubs in former striker Fernando Morientes (333 appearances), defensive midfielder Fabinho (220 appearances) and former goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek (198 appearances). There have also been three players who are far less remembered for playing for either of these clubs that feature: Nicolas Anelka (55 appearances), Antonio Núñez (41 appearances), and Nuri Şahin (22 appearances).
