Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted that Rúben Amorim is ‘doing his best’ at Manchester United but it’s impossible for the Portuguese boss to work ‘miracles’. Ronaldo developed into one of the best players in the world at Old Trafford and won his first Ballon d’Or as a United player before departing for Real Madrid in 2009.

The 40-year-old returned for a second spell at the English giants in 2021 but although his goalscoring numbers were impressive for his age, Ronaldo’s tenure ended on a sour note after falling out with Erik ten Hag. The legendary attacker won every major club honour possible in English football at United but the club have endured some dark days across the last decade. Amorim led United to their worst ever Premier League finish last season and Ronaldo has discussed his fellow countryman in a wide ranging interview with Piers Morgan.

Amorim has faced severe pressure during his year in charge at Old Trafford but there’s been signs of optimism soon and Ronaldo believes he needs time. “He’s [Amorim] doing his best,” said Ronaldo. “What are you going to do? Miracles. Miracles are impossible. We say in Portugal, ‘Miracles are only in Fatima’... And he’s not gonna do miracles. They have good players but they don’t have, some of them, in mind what Manchester United is.”

In a previous interview with Morgan, Al-Nassr star Ronaldo was very critical of United’s hierarchy but he’s now reaffirmed his love for the club and expressed sadness over their current predicament. “For me, I'm sad because of the club, that’s one of the most important clubs in the world, and a club that I still have in my heart because of the obvious reasons,” added Ronaldo. “I won the Champions League there, I won the golden ball, I won like 12, 13, 14 titles there. So I repeat, Manchester United is still in my heart. I love that club. But we all have to be honest and look for ourselves and say, ‘Listen, they are not on a good path’.”
