The Old Firm derby is one of the fiercest in the world and there’s absolutely no love lost between Celtic and Rangers. Football is a way of life in Glasgow and the city comes to a stop when the two biggest teams in Scotland meet. Celtic have been utterly dominant over the last decade and beyond, winning 13 of the last 14 Scottish Premiership titles. But Rangers will be confident of getting a result this afternoon in the League Cup semi-finals with both sides enduring an incredibly dramatic start to the season.
Both Glasgow giants have lost their managers with Russell Martin sacked after a disastrous tenure at Ibrox, while Brendan Rodgers walked away from Celtic last week amid tensions with the board. Former Hoops boss Martin O’Neill has replaced Rodgers on a temporary basis, while Danny Röhl has sparked optimism in the Rangers support. Celtic and Rangers: Most valuable combined XI
These combined XIs have been dominated by Celtic players in recent years due to their superiority but it’s now more balanced, due to the addition of three summer signings from Rangers. Youssef Chermiti, Nasser Djiga and Mikey Moore all make the side, following their arrivals at Ibrox in the transfer window. Moreover, Tottenham loanee Moore is now the most valuable player in Scotland at €16 million, with Daizen Maeda’s Celtic’s top star at €15m.
Arne Engels and Reo Hatate both received downgrades in the recent Scottish Premiership market value update but they both feature in midfield, alongside Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin - the Belgian midfielder recently replaced Engles in the national team squad. Three Celtic defenders feature in the back-four with Rangers’ Jack Butland the goalkeeper. Overall, five Rangers stars and six Celtic feature in the combined XI with a market value of €114.5m.
