On Monday Aston Villa confirmed that they had completed the signing of Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho on loan. The Birmingham club will reportedly cover 80 percent of the former England international's wages for the duration of the spell and pay an initial fee to bring the player to the club. The player has 12 months left on his contract at Old Trafford, but Man Utd have an option to extend it by a further year. The move represents Sancho’s third loan in two years after previous spells at Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.

The England international was expected to join Chelsea on a permanent deal this summer but the Blues paid a €5.8 million penalty after reneging on an obligation to buy clause. It’s understood that Chelsea were keen on Sancho remaining at Stamford Bridge but the winger was unwilling to take a wage cut. Sancho is on a sizable wage at Old Trafford and he turned down an opportunity to join Roma last week.

It’s been a frustrating summer for Aston Villa with the club restricted in the transfer market due to PSR restrictions. Villa have also endured a difficult start to the Premier League season, failing to win in their opening three games and they sit second bottom in the table. Villa are the only team to have failed to score so far this season and Emery will hope that Sancho can provide a creative spark. The winger enjoyed a decent spell at Chelsea last season with 15 goal contributions in 41 games and he scored in the Europa Conference League final. United spent €85m to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 but he was unable to replicate the incresible success that he enjoyed in the Bundesliga.
