Two in a row for Barca star

Despite still being 18 years old, Lamine Yamal has a glittering trophy cabinet and the wonderkid has another award to add to his vast collection. For the second consecutive season, Yamal has been voted as Transfermarkt’s LaLiga player of the season. The 18-year-old was instrumental as Barcelona won LaLiga again after finishing a remarkable 12 points ahead of arch rivals Real Madrid.
Yamal finished with 28 goal contributions - 16 goals and 12 assists - in 28 league games, which is the most from any U21 player across the top five leagues. The Spanish international finished with 38.7% of the overall vote, with Barca teammate Pedri in second (15.54%) and Arda Güler in third place (15.38%). Kylian Mbappé ranked fourth overall (12.37%) with Real Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi (4.71%) the only player outside of the two biggest Spanish clubs in the top ten.
Transfermarkt allows its community to vote for players in the four different main positions; goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and attackers. Naturally, Yamal won the voting in attackers with 58.7%, Pedri for midfielders (57%), Pau Cubarsí for defenders (46.1%) and Joan Garcia (62.95%). Perhaps unsurprisingly, Barcelona players won in every single category, which further highlights their dominance in LaLiga and to gain insight into Yamal winning the main award, we spoke to Ivan Fuente, Transfermarkt’s Area Manager for Spain.

Fuente said: “Yamal has been LaLiga’s most influential player. At various moments during the season, he carried the team on his shoulders and kept them at the top. Despite his injury late in the season, Yaml still finished amongst the top scorers in the league and only Mbappé provided more assists. Without Yamal, Barça wouldn’t have won the title.”
