Michael Carrick has been appointed as Manchester United manager on a permanent basis. The 44-year-old has been rewarded for transforming United’s fortunes since replacing Rúben Amorim as interim manager and leading the club back to the Champions League. Carrick has accumulated the highest points tally of any Premier League manager since taking the reins in January and he secured a third place finish.

The Englishman has been handed a two-year contract until 2028 with an option for a further year and he will be tasked with returning United to former glories. Speaking on his appointment, the former United midfielder said: “Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride. “Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.” Carrick will need to silence doubters by continuing his success next season but his record in the dugout for United makes for mighty impressive reading.

Michael Carrick’s points per game record compared to predecessors

Man United’s struggles since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson although their dark years still yielded more major trophies than most English clubs. The legendary Scottish manager delivered 13 Premier League titles to firmly establish United as the dominant force in English football, but they’ve failed to be crowned champions since. Carrick is the eight permanent United boss since Ferguson and he comfortably boasts the best points per game record - we’ve not included his previous interim spell in 2021 but the numbers are almost identical.

As the graphic above illustrates, Carrick averages 2.25 ppg from his 16 games in charge, which includes 11 wins. José Mourinho ranks second with an average of 1.89 with the much derided Louis van Gaal (1.79) completing the top three. To great surprise, Amorim has the worst record of 1.23 and Carrick has successfully improved results since replacing the Portuguese boss. The challenge now for Carrick is to replicate results and improve performance levels with United’s schedule more daunting next season with European football.
