It’s widely acknowledged that one of the easiest ways to score is from the penalty spot. The statistics are massively in the attacking teams favour when a penalty is awarded and that’s why referees decisions are often so contentious. With the controversial introduction of VAR, incidents in the penalty area are under the spotlight more than ever.
It’s truly a golden opportunity to score from 12 yards out and designated takers’ eyes light up when they can improve their numbers from the spot. It’s estimated that around 80% of penalties are converted and that number increases for some of the best takers in history - Harry Kane, Ronald Koeman and Cristiano Ronaldo. Using Transfermarkt data, we’ve analysed which clubs were awarded the most penalties across 2025.
Which clubs received the most penalties in 2025?
We’ve analysed the data from top ten league clubs across all competitions and Benfica received the most penalties last year with 26. Interestingly, the Portuguese giants received five more spot-kicks than any other club and they converted 23 of their penalties. The column inches in the Spanish media are often dominated by perceived refereeing conspiracies around their two leading clubs - Real Madrid and Barcelona.

And as the graphic above illustrates, Los Blancos received more penalties in 2025 than their arch rivals, ranking second overall with 21 - Barcelona rank tenth with 14. Galatasaray complete the top three after being awarded 16 penalties and they impressively converted 15 of those. Unsurprisingly, some major European clubs feature in the top ten with Bayern Munich and PSG ranked fourth and fifth respectively.
