Ahead of new season

As another season hurtles towards its beginning, the balance sheets across Europe’s top-five leagues tell two very different stories. At one end, some clubs have thrown open the vaults - breaking records, chasing statement signings, and fuelling dreams of silverware. At the other, a handful have tiptoed through the market with minimal outlay, relying on free transfers, youth promotions, and tactical restraint to shape their squads.
The contrast is striking. While certain sides have splashed out nine-figure sums to refresh their rosters, others have spent less than the cost of a single star player - testing the theory that cohesion can sometimes beat cash. From Premier League heavyweights to LaLiga traditionalists and Serie A upstarts, Transfermarkt breaks down which clubs have been the most lavish and the most frugal ahead of the new season, revealing the top 10 for the most money spent and the least money spent among current top-five league clubs.
Which top-5 league clubs have spent the most this summer?
Leading the way are Premier League champions Liverpool with a whopping €294 million already spent during this summer's transfer window. They are followed in second by Club World Cup winners Chelsea who have continued splashing the cash this summer, having spent €280m. The Premier League's dominance in the market continues with Manchester United (€230m) in third, Arsenal (€224m) in fourth, and Manchester City (€177m) in fifth. The two Madrid clubs take sixth and seventh, with Atlético Madrid spending €175m and Real Madrid spending €168m. Sunderland (€153m), Tottenham (€146m), and Burnley (€126m) complete the top 10.
Which top-5 league clubs have spent the least this summer?
At the other end of the scale, no club has currently spent less than Crystal Palace, who have only spent €2.3m to date. Second are LaLiga outfit Levante with a €2.5m spend so far. Serie A's Lecce take this having spent €3m. Ligue 1 side Monaco are fourth also with a €3m spend. Rayo Vallecano take fifth having spent €3.1m. Five of the top 10 are LaLiga teams.
