The Premier League is now well and truly firing on all cylinders. The title race is undoubtedly picking up steam and the relegation battle couldn’t be more interesting, while a whole host of clubs continue to churn back and forth between both ends of the table. And amongst all that madness has been some of the best players in the world locking horns to see who can come out on top. So which Premier League stars outperformed all others over the course of matchday six? Here’s what the UK Transfermarkt team thinks.
When it comes to defence there were three clear teams that stood out above all others. Perhaps the most notable one to note first has to be Sunderland, who picked up an impressive 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Between the sticks, goalkeeper Robin Roefs made no less than six saves over the course of the game to ensure a slender win for the Black Cats and as such gets a spot in our team. Just in front of him at left-back is none other than Omar Alderete, whose header in the 38th minute claimed all three points for Régis Le Bris’ side.
Another stalwart performance in defence could be found at Crystal Palace, who performed perhaps the biggest shock of the weekend in beating Liverpool 2-1. Although the reigning English champions did score a goal, it was Palace’s rigged defence that kept Arne Slot’s team at bay and at the heart of that was central defender Marc Guéhi. He joins Arsenal pair Gabriel Magalhães and Jurriën Timber, who both played pivotal roles in the North London club’s dramatic comeback win over Newcastle, in making up the back line.
When it comes to the midfield duo there are once again two stand-out performers that deserved to be in the team of the week. The first is undoubtedly Leeds United star Sean Longstaff, who not only set up Joe Rodon to score his side’s equaliser against Bournemouth on Saturday, but also scored a lovely right-footed shot to put the club in front in the second half. And even though the guests did score a last-minute equaliser, it was a point well earned thanks to the 27-year-old midfielder. Alongside him is Aston Villa star John McGinn, who scored his team’s second goal in a 3-1 win over Fulham that pulled the Birmingham club out of the bottom three with their first victory of the league campaign.
On the right wing we have another Palace star who was undoubtedly a key player in Oliver Glasner’s team beating Liverpool. Although he was excellent throughout the match, it was Ismaïla Sarr’s right-footed shot just nine minutes into the game that earned him his spot in this week’s team. And he’s joined on the opposite wing by Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku, who bagged his third assist of the league campaign in his club’s 5-1 routing of Burnley.
Up front we have two strikers that undoubtedly showed their unquestioned qualities this weekend. The first needs little introduction in Man City striker Erling Haaland, who bagged a brace and an assist to boot in the aforementioned win over Burnley, putting the Norwegian talisman on eight goals and one assist in his first six league games of the season. He’s joined in attack by Brentford striker Igor Thiago, who picked up a brace with two outstanding goals in Brentford’s somewhat shocking 3-1 win over Manchester United.
