Even in a market driven by billion-euro transfers and record-breaking fees, there’s still a special intrigue in the players who cost nothing at all. The latest October Transfermarkt market value update has refreshed the list of the most valuable free agents in world football, highlighting stars who could still be picked up on a free transfer at this stage of the season. From seasoned internationals still capable of changing a game, to younger prospects waiting for the right project, the current pool of free agents still makes an interesting read with plenty of nostalgic names cropping up. Here’s a look at the most valuable free agents in the world right now after Transfermarkt's latest update.

Leading the way as the current most valuable star looking for a new club is former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. The Japanese full-back terminated his contract with the Gunners by mutual consent this summer, and sees his market value drop from €18 million to €16m in this latest update. There have been rumours that Brighton are among the clubs considering making a move, but worries remain over the injury issues that have derailed his career. Second on the list is Brazilian full-back Renan Lodi. The 27-year-old has played 19 times for Brazil, but left Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in the summer, and sees his value drop from €13m to €12m.

The full-back domination continues in third with former Tottenham man Sergio Reguilón now down to a €5m market value. As illustrated in the graphic above, some other familiar names in the top include 32-year-old Moroccan Hakim Ziyech (€3m), 26-year-old former Brentford midfielder Josh DaSilva (€3m), 32-year-old former Spain and Barcelona striker Paco Alcácer (€2.5m), and 27-year-old former Watford and Nottingham Forest forward Emmanuel Dennis (€2m).
