Thousands of Yogyakarta residents participated in the Mubeng Beteng title the previous year.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The evening celebration of 1 Suro or Javanese New Year Be 1960 in Yogyakarta this year will bring a different atmosphere. The tradition of Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng that is regularly held every night 1 Suro will begin with the staging of Wayang Kulit Gedhog, a rare art that is now rarely staged in Yogyakarta.
The series of events will take place on Tuesday (16/6/2026) evening until Wednesday (17/6/2026) early in the morning. Before the participants walk around the fortress of Yogyakarta Palace in a quiet and solemn atmosphere, the public will be treated to Pagelaran Ringgit Wacucal Gedhog with the play Jaya Berdangga. “Usually to welcome this Javanese New Year, Paguyuban Abdi Dalem organizes Hajad Kawula Dalem Mubeng Beteng. Well this year, we from Kawedanan Kridhamardawa contributed to it by presenting a staging of gedhog skin puppets that was held before the dawn of the mubeng beteng culture,” said one of the Abdi Dalem Dalang Kridhamardawa, who assumed the duties as the production manager of the staging, MB. Cermo Gupito, in his caption, Sunday (14/6/2026).
Cermo Gupito said that puppet staging is a reflection for the community before performing the spiritual practice of Suro 1 night through Mubeng Beteng. Wayang Gedhog is one of the rare collections of assets belonging to the Yogyakarta Palace that elevates Panji's story, in contrast to the purwa puppetry that is better known through the stories of Mahabarata and Ramayana.
Through the momentum of the Java New Year, Keraton hopes that the art will again be recognized and sustainable among the community. “People can define puppet staging in order to seek 'sangu' for introspection, because of course in the title of puppet stories many philosophies of life are contained,” he said.
After staging the puppet show, people can join Hajad Kawula Dalem Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng which will start at 00.00 WIB from Bangsal Pancaniti Keraton Yogyakarta.
