Attention turns briefly away from the Premier League this week, as the EFL Cup returns this Tuesday, with the round of 16 getting underway. Some interesting ties lay ahead with Tottenham going to holders Newcastle, a Welsh derby between Wrexham and Cardiff, whilst League Two's Grimsby Town will be looking to strike another upset against Brentford. But across the years, which players have tasted the most success in the League Cup? Transfermarkt has calculated the 20 players with the most trophies won across the years - players that are level on trophies are separated by the most appearances made in the competition.

Players with the most EFL Cup trophies

Two players have managed to win the EFL Cup as many as six times, but leading, having made slightly more appearances, is legendary former Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero. The Argentine played 22 times in the competition and won it six times with the Sky Blues. Also winning the EFL Cup six times with Man City is former midfielder Fernandinho - the Brazilian made 20 League Cup appearances. There are then four players who have lifted the trophy on five separate occasions. Leading that bunch is former Liverpool striker Ian Rush - the prolific Welshman played as many as 81 times in the competition. Fourth, fifth and sixth then goes to Raheem Sterling (40 apps), Kevin De Bruyne (29 apps), and David Silva (19 apps) respectively.

Interestingly, all of the top 20 players won the competition for either Man City, Liverpool or Manchester United. The Sky Blues are the most dominant team on the list after their recent success in the competition under Pep Guardiola - 10 of the top 20 won the EFL Cup with Man City. The Red Devils only inclusions are Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney who lifted the trophy four times apiece, whilst former England striker Emile Heskey is the only member of the top 20 to win the competition with two different clubs, having won it twice at both Liverpool and Leicester.
