Having already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali and brought in winger Bazoumana Touré, Newcastle United's busy transfer window looks set to continue with another young talent making his way to St James' Park. The Magpies are working to complete a deal for 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Eredivisie club Ajax. The proposed deal is expected to consist of a fee in the region of €25 million. The player has a current market value of just €7m.

The player has reportedly already said his goodbyes to players and staff at Ajax ahead of the anticipated move. Ajax wanted Steur to stay but the highly-rated midfielder has entered the final two years of his contract, with no indication of renewing, meaning the club may have to reluctantly make a sale. Steur is another prospect of the seemingly ever-flowing conveyor belt of talent at the Amsterdam giants. With expert insight from our team in the Netherlands, we bring you more on the young midfielder.

What kind of player is Sean Steur?

Steur began last season in Ajax’s youth team, which plays in the second tier of Dutch football, but made his mark and broke into the first team during the campaign. He ended the 2025/26 season with 25 first-team appearances. Owen van Leeuwen is one of Tranfermarkt's Content Manager in the Netherlands and tells us more about Steur: "Steur is one of the biggest midfield talents Ajax has produced in recent years. At 18, he already showed he could cope with Eredivisie football, but he's still very much a player in development. If everything falls into place, he has the potential to become a top-level midfielder."

"He's a technically gifted central midfielder who is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and progressing play through passing or carrying the ball," van Leeuwen continued. "His composure, football IQ and decision-making stand out for his age. Physically, though, he still has room to develop, and he isn't the explosive athlete who will dominate games through power or pace. The comparison isn't perfect, but his style reminds me a little of a young Frenkie de Jong. Not because they're identical players, but because they share the same calmness on the ball, ability to escape pressure and willingness to progress play."

So, is Steur ready for the physical demands of the Premier League? "Eventually, yes. But probably not straight away," van Leeuwen answered. "He's joining Newcastle as a long-term investment rather than someone expected to start every week from day one. If he's given time to develop, whether through gradual integration or a loan, he has the qualities to succeed. Patience will be crucial."
