Bayern Munich dominate

The Bundesliga is the least competitive of the top five leagues with Bayern Munich enjoying a monopoly in terms of the title, but the Germany top-flight remains very exciting. It has a compelling claim as the best major league to watch due to the attacking instincts of teams and high-scoring games. Bayern Munich have been crowned champions in 13 of the last 14 seasons and it’s difficult to envisage their complete dominance ending anytime soon. The Bavarian club is by far the most successful club in Germany with 35 league titles, which is 26 ahead of second-placed Nuremberg.
The Bundesliga has gained the reputation for being exceptional at developing young players before being sold for eye-watering fees. Florian Wirtz’s €125 million move to Liverpool last summer broke the British transfer record and Yan Diomande is likely to depart RB Leipzig for a similar fee this summer. But who are the most expensive signings for Bundesliga clubs? With the transfer window now open, we’ve analysed the record signings by German clubs. You can view the full top 100 list of most expensive signings in the link below - which will update throughout the summer - and we’ve closer analysed the top 20.
The top 20 most expensive Bundesliga signings in history
Harry Kane’s €95m move from Tottenham to Bayern Munich in 2023 remains the Bundesliga transfer record. It’s unquestionably been a hugely successful move with 146 goals in 147 games, although the Champions League still escapes him. Unsurprisingly, 13 of the top 20 most expensive signings by Bundesliga clubs were made by Bayern, including the top six.

As the graphic above illustrates, Lucas Hernández’s €80m move from Atlético Madrid ranks second with Luis Díaz’s €70m transfer from Liverpool in third. The biggest deal outside of Bayern was Julian Draxler’s €43m move to Wolfsburg from Schalke. RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen signings both feature in the top 20 but interestingly, Borussia Dortmund are absent with their record signing Ousmane Dembélé’s €35m arrival from Rennes - which ranks joint-20th.
