British superbike rider Callum Grigor has been taken out of an induced coma 17 days after sustaining a head injury and fractures in a crash at Donington Park.

The Scot came off his bike on the approach to Goddards Corner on the opening lap of the Pirelli National Superstock Championship race on 6 September.

Team Grigor said on Facebook, external that the 26-year-old "has now opened his eyes and is able to minimally communicate but is still very sleepy", adding: "He is smiling at all the nurses who have come to see him finally awake."

Grigor's respiratory function had been aided by a ventilator, but the breathing tube has now been removed.

His team confirmed he suffered a head injury from the initial impact of his crash, as well as spinal fractures, a broken scapula, shoulder socket and elbow joint, as well as a deep puncture wound to an arm.

However, they say the most significant injuries were to his chest and lungs, including multiple rib fractures.

"Callum has been able to get to this point due to the timely intervention from all the medical staff at BSB [British Superbikes] and those at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham," they added.

"Their efforts have undoubtedly saved his life. We can never thank them all enough."

More than £23,000 has been reportedly, external raised to help the Wishaw rider's family.

Isle of Man rider Nathan Harrison, 27, was also involved in the crash and was treated for a limb injury.

"We were delighted and relieved to see Nathan up on his feet in his last update," Team Grigor said. "We continue to send our well wishes to Nathan and his family."
