Newcastle United have completed the signing of highly-rated French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims. The 20-year-old was a shining light for Reims last season, keeping 25 clean sheets for the Ligue 2 side to generate interest from a host of European clubs. Transfermarkt understands that Newcastle will pay Reims an initial €21 million fee, plus €4m in potential add-ons for Jaouen.
Speaking on his signing, Jaouen said: “I’m really excited to become a Newcastle United player. When I visited the training ground, I could see how passionate everyone is about the club and the work they do, and I loved the environment straight away. I also had the chance to see the stadium and it’s huge.” To provide context to his potential, Jaouen is currently the fourth most valuable U21 goalkeeper in the world with a market value of €12m. If you alter the parameters to U20 goalkeeper then he ranks second, behind Chelsea’s Mike Penders (€25m). To gain expert insight into Jaouen, we spoke to Ronan Caroff, Transfermarkt's Area Manager for France.
The view from France
Snatched by Reims for free from Guingamp on a technicality in the summer of 2023 at 17 years old, there was always some buzz around Jaouen before he reached senior ranks. This was highlighted by regular calls up to French youth teams and that’s continued to U21 level. His rise has been gradual, from reserve teams to a couple of loans, to now the confirmation at a higher level - a bit like the Robin Risser path.
Witnessing name already in Les Bleus roster a year after his Ligue 1 debut, surely gives some inspiration as to what type of rise a great goalkeeper prospect like Jaouen could aim for He is a big fan of Manuel Neuer, and also on his last loan to Dunkerque, he learned a lot from Christophe Lollichon, who was the GK coach of Chelsea for almost 10 years - mainly during the Petr Cech era and the start of Thibaut Courtois.
