It’s only two games into the World Cup for Kylian Mbappé but it’s already been a historic tournament for the French superstar. Didier Deschamps’ men are the favourites to be crowned champions this summer in North America and Mbappé will be integral to their prospects. The 27-year-old entered the tournament off a difficult season for Real Madrid but he still put up very impressive numbers with 42 goals in 44 games.

In France’s opener against Senegal, Mbappé scored twice to first level then surpass Olivier Giroud as his nation’s all-time record goalscorer. Giroud held the record for several years with 57 goals in 137 appearances but Mbappé reached 58 goals in 99 games. The Madrid star led his nation out against Iraq in Philadelphia for his 100th cap, and it was no great surprise that he opened the scoring with an excellent left-footed effort. To contextualize Mbappé’s international excellence, we’ve analysed the players across history to score the most goals by the milestone of their 100th cap.

Most goals after 100 caps in international football

After collecting his 100th cap for France, Mbappé has now scored an impressive 60 goals for his country. Lionel Messi smashed Miroslav Klose’s record for most goals in World Cup history with his incredible five goals in two games for Argentina but it feels inevitable that Mbappé will break that record in the future. Interestingly, only three European players have scored more goals in their first 100 games for their country across history; Harry Kane (68), Romelu Lukaku (67) and Aleksandar Mitrović (62).

As the graphic above illustrates, Ali Daei holds the outright record for most goals in first 100 games for their country with the striker netting 76 for Iran. Ali Mabkhout ranks second after scoring 75 goals in his first 100 international games for the United Arab Emirates with England captain Kane completing the top three. Mbappé is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation and his numbers in his first 100 caps are significantly higher than Messi (46) and Cristiano Ronaldo (37).
