As is usually the case for Chelsea, it looks set to be another busy summer at Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso will arrive as the new manager, after both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior were sacked last season. Despite spending over €2 billion this decade, their young squad still needs a serious overhaul if the Blues are to get back towards the Champions League places. They finished 10th last term. There will be incomings and certainly be outgoings, and one player who could leave the club for pastures new could be star left-back Marc Cucurella.
Reports suggest that multiple clubs have been in touch with Cucurella's team about a possible summer move, with the player thought to be willing to leave in the upcoming transfer window. Cucurella signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge last summer, but in March spoke to The Athletic on international duty and criticised the club's transfer policy, as well as the decision to part ways with Maresca. So with plenty of interest in the Spaniard, we have picked out four clubs who could very realistically sign Cucurella this summer.
Four clubs who could sign Marc Cucurella
Barcelona
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has reportedly been in touch with Cucurella's camp, as he and manager Hansi Flick are both thought to be admirers. Nevertheless, any chance of a deal progressing depends on a Barcelona defender leaving the Camp Nou this summer, with the club expected to consider offers for Alejandro Baldé and Jules Kounde. Cucurella has previously expressed his will to return one day to his native LaLiga, and his ability to invert and pass the ball forward could be key to the Catalan side.
Manchester City
Inbound Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca had a great relationship with Cucurella at Chelsea. The Sky Blues were also previously interested in the defender when he was at Brighton, before his move to Chelsea. However, Nico O’Reilly has shone for them in that position last season - and any first-team arrival would have to compete with him, as well as Rayan Aït-Nouri for a place in the team. Nevertheless, Maresca’s is thought to be interested in boosting his options at full-back this summer, and Cucurella may well jump at the chance to work again with his old manager.
Atlético Madrid
Atlético Madrid have also reportedly been in touch regarding signing Cucurella this summer. Diego Simeone’s team view a left-back as one of their top priorities in the transfer window, and Cucurella is very high on their wish list. Sporting director Mateu Alemany is leading the chase for Cucurella and has also spoken to his camp. Atlético are one of the more likely sides to close a deal in the near future as they do not have to wait on sales before advancing their interest, and could offer Cucurella a way back to LaLiga, a crucial role, and Champions League football.
Real Madrid
Their city rivals Real Madrid are also thought to be looking for a left-back this summer, and are fans of Cucurella, but it is unclear if they will have the finances for this move, and may prioritise other areas such as midfield. Álvaro Carreras enjoyed a strong start to his Los Blancos career, but really tailed off in the second half of the season, and Cucurella could offer a different kind of profile for new (old) manager José Mourinho.
