Jac Morgan has told the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) he will leave club rugby in Wales if Ospreys cease to exist.
Ospreys say the Wales and British and Irish Lions flanker has warned the governing body, which is considering cutting the number of professional teams.
Chief executive Lance Bradley told supporters of Morgan's intentions at a meeting this week to discuss the hugely controversial proposals, that could see two of Ospreys, Scarlets, Dragons and Cardiff cut.
Morgan, the only Welsh player to be involved in the Lions series against Australia this summer, is the highest profile player to speak out against the threat to his club.
The 25-year-old, named Wales men's player of the year last week, is out of contract at the end of the 2025-26 season. Morgan joined Ospreys from Scarlets in 2021.
The WRU has said cutting the number of regions to two is the "radical solution" needed to improve the state of the domestic game in Wales.
But other funding models are being considered as the governing body undergoes a consultation with players, fans and stakeholders, which ends on 30 September.
The Welsh Rugby Players Association (WRPA) has told the WRU its proposals for the elite game would "drive talent to leave Wales".
Morgan is the most influential Welsh player currently and a candidate, alongside Dewi Lake, to captain Wales in November's autumn internationals.
A final decision on whether two teams will be cut will be made by the end of October.
