Harry Kane's incredible season with Bayern Munich has continued with England at this summer's World Cup. His brace against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the round of 32 spared the Three Lions' blushes and set up a round of 16 tie against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Kane now has five goals at this tournament, and is just one goal behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the World Cup golden boot race.
The England captain has now accumulated an incredible 72 goals in 62 games in all competitions for club and country this season. This includes 61 goals for Bayern and 12 for England. It is one of the most prolific seasons we have ever witnessed. When we take a look back at the players for top five league clubs to have scored the most goals in a single season for club and country, only one player can better Kane's numbers this season.
Most goals scored in a single season
The one player who has had a more prolific season than Kane this term is unsurprisingly Messi. The Argentine great scored an incredible 82 goals for Barcelona and Argentina in the 2011/12 season. That campaign, he won the Ballon d'Or and three trophies with Barca. Kane is now ranked joint second, but if we rank players level on goals by the fewest games played, he is actually third. Legendary German Gerd Müller scored 72 goals in 54 games in the 1972/73 season for Bayern and Germany.

Incredibly, Kane is now six goals ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo's best ever scoring season. The global superstar managed 66 goals for Real Madrid and Portugal in both the 2014/15 and 2011/12 seasons. As did the great Brazilian Ronaldo in the 1996/97 season for Barcelona and Brazil. Erling Haaland (64 goals for Manchester City & Norway in 2022/23), Luis Suárez (64 goals for Barcelona & Uruguay in 2015/16) and Müller again (62 goals for Bayern & Germany in 1971/72) complete the top 10 best scoring seasons.
